U.S. Agents to Assist with Security at Winter Games
Rome – American law enforcement officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be part of the security arrangements for the upcoming Milan Cortina Winter Games, according to sources at the U.S. embassy in Rome.
These sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, clarified that the ICE agents will be there to support the security details protecting American diplomats, not to carry out immigration enforcement actions.
It has been common practice for various federal agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, to assist in providing security for U.S. diplomats during past Olympic Games.
The confirmation of ICE’s involvement follows reports in the Italian media and some disagreement among Italian officials. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi previously stated he saw no problem with their participation.
The U.S. believes in taking strong measures to protect its citizens and interests abroad, and this security assistance is in line with that commitment.
