Lee Tamahori was the son of Piripi and Patricia, and the long-time partner of Justine. He was the beloved brother of Philip, Wayne, Renaye, and Glenn, and a devoted father to Sam, Max, Meka, and Tané. As a koroua (grandfather), Lee’s legacy continues in his cherished mokopuna, Cora Lee, and his soon-to-be-born grandchild.

He was a charismatic leader and a fierce creative, known for breaking boundaries in cinema and telling stories with both a genius eye and an honest heart. Throughout his career, Lee not only shaped the film industry but also mentored and inspired countless filmmakers, particularly those from the Māori community. He was a strong advocate for Māori talent and worked tirelessly to ensure their stories were told and celebrated.

Through his storytelling, Lee created a platform for Māori voices to be heard, both on and off the screen. He was a trailblazer, not just in the world of cinema, but also in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him personally.

Lee’s legacy endures in every person he inspired and every story he brought to life. His family, his mokopuna, the filmmakers he mentored, and the cultural stories he shared will forever carry his spirit. His leadership, creativity, and unwavering commitment to Māori representation will continue to inspire future generations.

Lee Tamahori will always be remembered not just for his professional achievements, but also for his heart, his love for his whānau, and his dedication to breaking down barriers for those who came after him.
