Avery Devon Neal, 32, who survived the 2021 mass shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run on the night of October 4, 2025. His family, still reeling from the previous tragedy, is now grappling with the sudden loss of a son, brother, and friend.

    What Happened

On the evening of October 4, 2025, Avery Neal was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking near the intersection of Michigan and Cooper roads on the northwest side of Indianapolis. According to police, Neal had just gotten off the bus and was heading to his mother’s house when the accident occurred. Despite attempts by a good Samaritan to stop traffic and help, Neal was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, and as of Monday afternoon, no suspects or vehicle descriptions had been provided. The incident marks the 10th hit-and-run fatality in Indianapolis this year, as reported by Safe Streets Indy.

    Family’s Reaction and Memories

Neal’s family described him as “hilarious, fun, mindful,” and mischievous, especially being the second youngest of four siblings. His older brother, Darren Meyers, expressed the shock and confusion the family is facing. “We’re very much in shock,” Meyers said. “Not really knowing how to be in this moment right now.”

Neal’s aunt, Regina, shared a poignant message, urging others not to take someone’s life for the sake of getting to their destination: “It’s not worth it, taking someone else’s life because you’re trying to get to a destination.”

    Community Impact

Neal was well-loved in the community, known for his strength, both mentally and physically. He had a passion for running, having completed marathons and other races. His family mentioned that the Turkey Trot, an event Neal participated in every year, will be run in his honor next month.

    Investigation and Public Appeal

Indianapolis Metro Police are actively investigating the hit-and-run and are asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information about the incident or the driver involved is urged to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.

    Closing Line:

Avery Neal’s tragic death is a reminder of the importance of accountability on the road. His family and community are left with a profound loss, and they continue to call for justice in his case.
