It was supposed to be just another winter afternoon commute — but for the small town of Galesburg, it ended in unimaginable heartbreak. On Monday around 2:49 p.m., a crash on U.S. Highway 34 near Wataga claimed the life of 26-year-old Jordan Ball, a much-loved 7th-grade teacher and coach at Galesburg Junior/Senior High School.
According to investigators from Illinois State Police, Ball was driving a gray Kia sedan when it collided with a truck-tractor semi-trailer at or near the intersection of U.S. 34 and 2200 North (IL-167). Both directions of the highway shut down for hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage; the road reopened around 9:30 p.m.
By Tuesday, the Knox County coroner confirmed Ball’s identity. An autopsy was carried out Tuesday in Peoria, finalizing the official cause of death.
In a heartfelt statement to the public, Galesburg Junior/Senior High shared how deeply Ball had touched the lives of his students. “He was a caring educator who touched the lives of countless students at Galesburg Junior Senior High School,” the post read, extending condolences to his family. The school also announced that the Regional Office of Education #33’s Crisis Response Team would be available to support students, parents, and staff during this painful time.
Before joining Galesburg, Ball had taught and coached in the Monmouth-Roseville School District, where he made a lasting impression. A graduate of Monmouth College, he played college sports before moving into coaching and teaching — first as a varsity baseball coach at Monmouth-Roseville (2022–2024), then as a 7th-grade teacher and junior-high boys basketball coach in Galesburg. Those who knew him speak of his dedication: the kind of coach who still coached, even outside official practice, and a teacher who made every class feel personal.
But Ball’s legacy extended beyond school halls and sports fields. He leaves behind a family — a wife, Alex; a nearly 2-year-old son, Atticus; and a second child expected soon. In the wake of his death, a fund was set up to help his family with the sudden — and unimaginable — loss. Community members, former students, and colleagues have already begun to rally, sharing memories of his kindness and encouragement.
In the wake of the tragedy and amid slick, wintry road conditions, authorities are reminding all drivers to use extra caution — especially on rural highways like U.S. 34. But for Galesburg, the warning feels painfully inadequate. What remains now is the echo of Ball’s impact: the classrooms where students once laughed, the gym where he pushed young athletes to believe in themselves — and a community left struggling to fill a void no winter storm could ever create.
