Lydia Kaiser, a 12-year-old girl wounded in the Annunciation School mass shooting in Minneapolis, is taking a major step forward in her recovery by returning to school just over a month after the traumatic event. The young survivor, who was shot while attempting to protect a younger student, has shown incredible bravery and resilience in the face of physical and psychological challenges.

    What Happened

Lydia Kaiser, a seventh-grade student at Annunciation School, was severely injured during the mass shooting on August 27, 2025. In an act of heroism, she attempted to shield a younger student and was shot in the process. As part of her treatment, Lydia underwent surgery to remove a piece of her skull to relieve swelling in her brain.

Despite the severity of her injuries, Lydia has made significant progress. According to an update on her GoFundMe page posted on September 30, Lydia is back at school with her friends and teachers, surrounded by love and support. The post stated, “She remains a brave little fighter, and she is feeling stronger every day,” though it also acknowledged that Lydia will need ongoing care for the foreseeable future.

While Lydia has had to take a break from her favorite sports, volleyball and basketball, she is still actively cheering on her teammates and remains focused on recovery. The update also emphasized the emotional and psychological toll the shooting has had on Lydia, as well as the entire Annunciation community, but reiterated that they are all committed to “shining bright.”

    Family’s Advocacy for Gun Control

In the wake of the shooting, Lydia’s father, Harry Kaiser, who is a gym teacher at Annunciation School, and her mother, Leah, have become vocal advocates for change. They met with Vice President JD Vance to push for action on the rising tide of gun violence in America. During the meeting, they urged the Vice President and the Trump administration to take bipartisan action on commonsense gun legislation.

In a heartfelt message, Harry Kaiser read a note he and his wife wrote to Vice President Vance: “Will you please promise to pursue, despite powerful lobbies, some commonsense bipartisan legislation as a starting point, so we can come out of our corners and find the values that we share so that this time some progress is made? Thoughts and prayers haven’t been enough.”

    The Community’s Ongoing Support

The mass shooting at Annunciation School killed two students and left more than 20 others injured. Since then, the Annunciation community, including students, staff, and families, has rallied together to support the victims and their families. The GoFundMe post concluded with a message of encouragement for Lydia: “The darkest nights produce the brightest stars. Go shine bright, Lydia!”

    Public and Social Media Reactions

Lydia’s return to school has been met with an outpouring of support from the community. Social media posts from classmates, teachers, and local residents have shared messages of strength and encouragement for Lydia. The community’s support, as well as her ongoing recovery, serves as a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of tragedy.

Official Statements and What Happens Next

The Kaiser family continues to advocate for stronger gun control laws, emphasizing the need for legislative action in the wake of senseless violence. The Annunciation School community remains committed to healing and supporting Lydia, as well as all those affected by the tragedy.
