Mari Bonnici and Jeremy Lyle Santa Rosa Death – The Sonoma County community is reeling from a tragic and deeply unsettling event that claimed the lives of Mari Bonnici, 48, and her former husband, Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Lyle, 52, in what investigators are calling a murder–suicide.
According to the Santa Rosa Police Department, the fatal incident occurred on the evening of August 10, when multiple 911 calls reported the sound of gunfire in a residential neighborhood on the city’s west side. Responding officers arrived to find Bonnici and Lyle unresponsive, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced the pair dead at the scene.
Initial findings suggest that Lyle, who was off duty at the time, shot Bonnici before turning the gun on himself. Authorities recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Investigators believe the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute, though the exact circumstances and motive are still under investigation.
Police confirmed that Bonnici and Lyle had been married in the past but divorced several years ago. Sources close to the situation noted ongoing tensions between the two, though it remains unclear whether there had been previous reports of threats or domestic violence to law enforcement.
“This is a heartbreaking and deeply troubling case,” Santa Rosa Police Chief John Cregan said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues affected by this tragedy. Domestic violence has far-reaching consequences, and this case underscores the importance of early intervention and support.”
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Lyle had served in the department for over two decades. Sheriff Eddie Engram, in a brief public statement, expressed condolences to the families and acknowledged the emotional toll the incident has taken on the agency’s staff. “This is an extraordinarily difficult time for our agency,” Engram said. “We are providing grief counseling to our employees and will continue to cooperate fully with the Santa Rosa Police Department’s investigation.”
Friends and neighbors painted a portrait of Bonnici as a compassionate, warm-hearted individual dedicated to her community. “Mari was always smiling, always checking in on people,” said longtime neighbor Carla Jimenez. “She had a kind word for everyone. It’s devastating to think her life ended this way.”
Local advocacy groups are using the tragedy to remind the public of the dangers of intimate partner violence—even after a relationship has formally ended. The YWCA Sonoma County has urged anyone experiencing abuse, threats, or harassment to seek help immediately, emphasizing that resources and safe shelters are available.
Authorities have reassured residents that there is no ongoing threat to the public, noting that all indications point to this being an isolated incident. Autopsies for both Bonnici and Lyle are scheduled later this week to assist in confirming the sequence of events.
Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Santa Rosa Police Department’s Violent Crimes Investigations Unit as the community mourns two lives lost in a tragedy that has left a lasting mark on Sonoma County.
