PUEBLO, Colo. — The community of Pueblo is grieving after 77‑year-old Mary Tafoya was killed Monday afternoon in a violent, three‑vehicle crash at the intersection of West Northern Avenue and South Prairie Avenue. What began as an ordinary drive turned into tragedy just before rush hour.

According to investigators with the Pueblo Police Department, the collision — which struck a traffic light pole that later collapsed onto one of the cars — happened at approximately 3:48 p.m. Emergency responders raced to the scene beside Mountain View Cemetery, where they found Tafoya badly injured. Despite rapid transport to a nearby hospital and extensive lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced dead later that night.

Another driver involved was taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Officials confirmed the victims were in different vehicles.

Authorities say there is currently no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Instead, they are focusing on factors such as speed, road conditions, visibility and possible driver error.

The impact was powerful enough to knock out traffic signals, forcing the intersection — one of Pueblo’s busiest — to close for several hours while crews cleared debris and reconstructed the scene. It reopened early Tuesday morning, though police warned that until lights are repaired, drivers must treat the spot as a four‑way stop.

For friends, family and neighbors, Mary Tafoya was more than a victim — she was a beloved presence. Known for her warmth, kindness, and devotion to those she loved, her sudden loss has shaken communities across Pueblo. Vigils, condolences, and offers of support have poured in from those who knew her.

In the aftermath, Pueblo officials are issuing a renewed plea to drivers: slow down, stay alert, and treat high‑traffic intersections with care. As the investigation continues, many are left confronting a painful void — a life lost, families shattered, and a neighborhood forever changed by just one moment.
