The tight-knit community of Milford is reeling after the tragic death of 19-year-old Sarah A. Mischke, who lost her life in a heartbreaking head-on collision on State Road 15 Thursday morning. According to Kosciusko County officials, first responders arrived at the scene around 11:31 a.m. in Van Buren Township to find Sarah’s Hyundai Accent in a fatal crash with a Chevrolet Silverado.

Sarah, who lived in Milford, was pronounced dead at the scene by Kosciusko County Coroner Tyler Huffer. The other driver, a 68-year-old man from Goshen identified as Dale E. Wert, was rushed to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

At just nineteen, Sarah was beloved by many. Those who knew her describe a gentle, caring soul — someone whose kindness made everyday moments brighter. She had a way of making people feel seen, whether through laughter, quiet support, or just being there when someone needed her. Her loss has left an emptiness that echoes through the hearts of family, friends, and her entire community.

Emergency crews from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, Milford Police and Fire Departments, and Lutheran EMS all responded to the crash. A third vehicle, not directly involved in the collision, also sustained damage from flying debris. Meanwhile, the county’s FACT (Fatal Accident Crash Team) is conducting a thorough investigation into what caused the crash.

In the wake of her passing, people have begun to share memories of Sarah — stories of her warmth, her generosity, and the light she carried into every room. Though she was young, she made a big impact, and many are finding comfort in remembering the dreams she had, the laughter she shared, and the joy her presence brought to those around her.

While the official cause of the crash remains under review, the community’s focus has shifted: honoring Sarah’s life. Flowers, messages, and prayers are being offered, not just for her family, but for all who loved her. In grieving, they’re also celebrating. Her memory has become a rallying point for those who want to preserve her spirit — to keep her kindness alive in the world she left behind.

It’s impossible to fill the void she’s left, but Sarah’s story — her kindness, her promise, her gentle heart — is already shaping how her community holds on, heals, and hopes. And even though she’s gone, her light continues to shine in the lives she touched.
