WASHINGTON — On Saturday, governors from three Republican-led states announced the deployment of hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. West Virginia is sending 300 to 400 troops, while South Carolina and Ohio are contributing 200 and 150 troops, respectively. This deployment is a substantial show of support for a federal intervention that the administration argues is necessary to ensure safety and order in Washington.
The move follows President Trump’s executive order that aimed to federalize local police forces and activate around 800 National Guard members already stationed in D.C. Critics argue that this is an unnecessary escalation, as historical data suggests that crime levels, in some regards, have improved compared to prior years. Nonetheless, the president maintains that the current situation warrants the additional presence of troops.
National Guard personnel have primarily been supportive forces, stationed at key locations like the National Mall and Union Station. Their role includes assisting local law enforcement with crowd control and other duties.
Governors from the affected states voiced their support for President Trump’s actions. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey emphasized the state’s pride in contributing to efforts aimed at restoring dignity and safety in D.C. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster noted that his state’s deployment was requested by the Pentagon, underscoring the collaborative effort between state and federal authorities.

Protests against this intervention were organized in D.C., with demonstrators arguing against what they perceive as a militarization of the police.
