On Tuesday afternoon, a horrifying shooting rocked the campus of Kentucky State University (KSU) in Frankfort — leaving one person dead and another gravely wounded, as police scrambled to secure the grounds and apprehend a suspect.

According to the Frankfort Police Department, deputies and KSU campus security were called to campus just after 3:35 p.m. following reports of an “active aggressor.” Within minutes, officers had locked down the entire campus and taken a suspect into custody.

Roughly an hour later, authorities confirmed the worst: one individual had succumbed to their injuries. A second person was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains in critical but stable condition, officials said.

Multiple news outlets, citing police statements and campus officials, identified the location of the shooting as Young Hall (also known as Whitney Moore Young Jr. Hall) — a dormitory on campus.

The university immediately went on lockdown. The shock was felt across the community as sirens, flashing lights and crime-scene tape surrounded dorm buildings — while students and faculty sheltered in place.

Andy Beshear, Governor of Kentucky, addressed the tragedy on social media: “We are aware of a reported shooting at Kentucky State University in Frankfort … Law enforcement are on scene, and a suspect has been arrested. Let’s pray for all those affected.”

Campus officials described the day’s events as a moment of deep sorrow. In a joint statement, they mourned the loss of a life — offering condolences to the victim’s family, support for the hospitalized student, and urging the entire KSU community to come together during this painful time. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities say more information will be released as it becomes available.
