The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) has successfully processed over 18,000 online driver’s license renewals, thanks to a new law aimed at increasing convenience for drivers. The surge in online renewals follows the implementation of Senate Bill 245, which was signed into law by Governor Josh Stein on September 30, 2025.
What Happened
Before Senate Bill 245, drivers could only renew their licenses online once. After that, they were required to complete an in-person renewal. However, with the passage of this new law, drivers can now renew their licenses online a second time, making the process easier and more efficient.
“We are thrilled to see such strong early adoption of this service, with over 18,000 renewals already processed,” said Paul Tine, NCDMV Commissioner. “This is a game-changer for North Carolinians who value convenience and efficiency and for DMV services.”
Expansion of Online Services
The successful rollout of online renewals is just the beginning. NCDMV expects further benefits from Senate Bill 245, including the ability to renew state ID cards, such as driver’s licenses, online as well. Additionally, NCDMV plans to expand online services to allow teen drivers to transition from a Level 2 limited provisional license to a Level 3 full provisional license, streamlining the process for young drivers.
Once fully implemented, the online upgrade is expected to allow for up to 400,000 additional online transactions annually, making the DMV process even more efficient for residents.
