The small town of Pahokee is reeling from a devastating loss. Joshua Jones, a 39-year-old local man, lost his life in a high-speed dirt bike accident on Christmas evening. It happened right in the heart of the community, turning a day of joy into one of deep sorrow.
Jones was riding his 2021 Yamaha YZ450F dirt bike north on Lake Avenue. The bike wasn’t meant for the road—it had no license tag and was deemed unroadworthy by authorities. He was zooming along at a high rate of speed, not wearing any safety gear. That’s when tragedy struck around 5:38 p.m.
At the same moment, a 59-year-old woman from Pahokee was behind the wheel of her 2015 Dodge Charger. She was heading south on Lake Avenue and started turning east onto East 4th Street. As she made the turn, the front of Jones’s dirt bike slammed into the right side of her car, right near the area between the front and rear doors.
The force of the crash was brutal. Jones got thrown from his bike and landed just north of the intersection, off to the east side of the road shoulder. His dirt bike skidded to a stop in the northeast corner of the crossroads. The Charger came to a controlled halt a bit east of where it all went down.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but it was too late. Jones was pronounced dead right there at 6:38 p.m., exactly an hour after the collision. The woman driving the Charger walked away without a scratch—she had her seatbelt on, and thankfully, no one suspects alcohol or drugs played a part for either of them.
Folks in Pahokee knew Jones as someone who brought real light into people’s lives. He had that kind of presence that made you smile, and his family and friends are shattered.
