Veteran Stock-Car Driver Dies at North Carolina Race
A beloved stock-car driver in North Carolina tragically lost his life over the weekend during a race at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem. Robbie Brewer, 53, suffered a medical emergency while racing on the quarter-mile track, leading to a serious crash. His vehicle collided head-on with a wall and came to a halt near the finish line.
Emergency workers had to remove the roof of Brewer’s car to assist him. He was quickly taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist hospital, where he later passed away. The details surrounding Brewer’s medical emergency have not been disclosed.
Bowman Gray Stadium is known for its lively Saturday night races, attracting thousands of fans every spring and summer. Brewer was racing in a 20-lap Sportsman Division event at the time. He had a storied career, starting in 1990 and completing nearly 260 races in the Sportsman Division, winning the points championship in 2011.
His fellow driver, Brad Lewis, who runs a race shop near Brewer’s home, paid tribute by saying, “He was like a big brother to me.” Lewis expressed his commitment to honor Brewer throughout the remainder of the racing season, stating that he will be sorely missed.
