It is with deep sadness that the Bellaire and Ohio basketball communities mourn the passing of Allan Hornyak, who died on August 25, 2025, at the age of 74. Known affectionately as “The Bellaire Bomber,” Hornyak leaves behind a legacy of remarkable athletic talent, humility, and lifelong impact.

Early Life and High School Stardom

Born on March 3, 1951, in Bellaire, Ohio, Allan Hornyak quickly rose to prominence as a basketball prodigy at St. John Central High School. His scoring dominance was unmatched, leading both the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) and the state of Ohio in scoring during the 1967–68 and 1968–69 seasons.

Hornyak averaged an astonishing 42.7 points per game as a junior and 41.9 points as a senior, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest high school scorers in state history. His legendary 86-point game against Tiltonsville High School and 61-point performance against rival Bellaire High School remain etched in Ohio basketball lore. By the end of his prep career, he had amassed 2,385 points, then a conference record.

    College Career at Ohio State

Hornyak went on to star at Ohio State University, sitting out his freshman season due to NCAA rules before leading the Buckeyes in scoring for three straight years (1970–1973). In just 69 games, he totaled 1,572 points, earning three All-Big Ten honors and honorable mention All-American recognition in his final two seasons.

It was during this era that Columbus sportscaster Jimmy Crum famously coined his enduring nickname, “The Bellaire Bomber.” Hornyak’s achievements later earned him induction into the Ohio State Sports Hall of Fame, solidifying his place among the Buckeyes’ greats.

Professional Draft and Life Beyond Basketball

In 1973, Hornyak was drafted in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers and also selected by the Indiana Pacers in the ABA Draft. Despite the opportunities, he chose not to pursue a professional playing career—an uncommon decision that reflected his humility, values, and focus on life beyond the spotlight.

A Legacy of Character and Community

Beyond the numbers and accolades, Hornyak was remembered for his kind heart, quiet strength, and devotion to family and friends. He remained deeply connected to his Bellaire roots, embodying sportsmanship, excellence, and loyalty to his community.

    Final Tribute

Allan Hornyak’s life story is one of extraordinary ability coupled with grace and humility. He will be remembered not only as a basketball legend but also as a beloved son of Ohio who inspired countless others with both his game and his character.

Rest in peace, Bellaire Bomber. Your light and legacy will never fade.
