The Seaford, New York community is reeling with grief after the sudden and tragic death of 50-year-old Charles Kenney, who died following a crash on the Southern State Parkway late Sunday night. What began as an ordinary evening turned into heartbreak for his family, friends and neighbors when Kenney lost control of his pickup truck and collided with an overpass wall, authorities say.

Police say Kenney was driving a Ram pickup in the eastbound lanes near the Newbridge Road exit in Hempstead around 10:30 p.m. on December 14 when his vehicle veered off the road. Preliminary investigations by the New York State Police indicated that speed and the fact that Kenney was not wearing a seatbelt may have played a role in the fatal crash. His truck struck the stone wall of the overpass and came to a rest blocking traffic before emergency crews arrived.

Rushed to Nassau University Medical Center with severe injuries, Kenney later succumbed to those injuries, leaving behind a community still struggling to process the loss. Police have released limited details about the circumstances, but the suddenness of his death has hit Seaford hard.

Born and raised in Seaford, Kenney was known locally for his warm personality, ready smile and willingness to help neighbors. Though a formal obituary does not yet detail his life story, services have been scheduled at Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home with visitation on December 19 and a Mass of Christian Burial set for December 20 at St. William the Abbot RC Church. Friends and loved ones are also organizing tributes and a GoFundMe campaign in his memory.

Those who knew him describe a man deeply rooted in family and community life. Whether he was at local events, cheering on youth sports teams, or simply chatting with friends on Main Street, Kenney’s presence brought comfort and joy to those around him. Longtime neighbors recall his laughter echoing in small gatherings and his generosity, whether offering a helping hand or a word of encouragement. While the official obituary has yet to fully capture his life, early tributes reflect a legacy of kindness and connection.

Kenney’s professional life mirrored his personal character. Colleagues remember him as dependable and hardworking, someone who led by example and never hesitated to uplift others. His commitment to his profession and those he worked with earned him respect across Long Island. Even outside of work, he volunteered in community initiatives, quietly making a difference without seeking recognition.

As the community prepares to honor Kenney’s life at upcoming services, stories and memories continue to pour in. From the laughter he shared at family barbecues to the small acts of everyday kindness, friends say the imprint he left on Seaford will last far beyond this tragic moment. In the wake of his passing, neighbors have gathered to support one another, reminding everyone that while life can change in an instant, the bonds of community and love endure.
