The St. Bernard Preparatory School community is grieving the tragic loss of Sarah Cumbie, a 16-year-old junior, who passed away on November 20, 2025, after a sudden and severe illness that emerged earlier that week. Her family, friends, and all those who knew her are left with heavy hearts, cherishing her strength, empathy, and potential as they come together in remembrance.

    What Happened:

On Sunday, November 16, Sarah was found critically ill at her residence and was quickly transported to Cullman Regional Medical Center before being moved to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham for specialized care. Despite the relentless efforts of healthcare workers and being placed on life support, Sarah was pronounced dead on November 20.

Her sudden illness and passing have left the St. Bernard community in shock, particularly as Sarah had displayed immense bravery throughout her life, overcoming personal tragedies with grace and determination.

    Sarah’s Life at St. Bernard:

Sarah entered St. Bernard Preparatory School as a seventh grader, just before she faced an unimaginable series of personal tragedies: the death of her father due to illness, followed shortly by the fatal car accident that took her mother’s life. In the face of these heartbreaking events, Sarah found a loving and supportive home in the St. Bernard girls’ dormitory and later with Dr. Craig Mann and his family, who became her steadfast supporters.

Despite the unimaginable hardships, Sarah blossomed into a compassionate, determined young woman who became an integral part of the St. Bernard family. Her kindness and resilience inspired all who knew her, and she was beloved by her peers, educators, and everyone who had the privilege of crossing her path.

    Sarah’s Generosity and Legacy:

Sarah’s passion for helping others extended far beyond the classroom. She spent much of her time volunteering at Curt’s Closet, where she formed a special bond with founder Ashley Wilson. Sarah had been eagerly preparing to participate in the Curt’s Christmas program, a testament to her dedication to bringing joy and comfort to children in need.

In a final act of selflessness, Sarah chose to become an organ donor. Her decision has the potential to save up to eight lives and improve the quality of life for over fifty others, demonstrating her deep compassion and generosity.

    Community Support:

As the St. Bernard community grapples with this immense loss, the school has made resources available to help students and families cope with their grief. Faculty, staff, clergy, and counselors are present on campus to provide support, and the chapel remains open for prayer, reflection, and quiet contemplation. Spaces around the campus have been designated for students to grieve, share memories, and honor Sarah’s vibrant spirit.

“We trust in God during this incredibly challenging period,” said Headmaster Phuong Nguyen. “Sarah was profoundly cherished by her peers, educators, and everyone who had the pleasure to know her. We invite our community to join us in prayer for Sarah, Dr. Mann, and their family.”

    Forever in Our Hearts:

Though Sarah’s life was tragically cut short, her legacy—founded on strength, kindness, brilliance, and love—will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were touched by her. Sarah’s memory will live on through the lives she impacted, the kindness she spread, and the love she shared.

    Closing Line:

This story may be updated with more information as the school community continues to grieve and honor Sarah’s memory.
