As Congress remains at odds over government funding, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has suggested that the potential lapse in food assistance for millions of Americans may not be enough to sway Democrats to compromise.

Jeffries criticized the prior administration, stating they should be able to find funds for food assistance, just as they found money for other countries. He accused Republicans of making a “vicious choice” that could leave Americans hungry.

The prior administration has said it would use funds to provide partial food-stamp benefits for November, following a judge’s ruling. However, officials stated the emergency fund was intended for natural disasters, not political disagreements. They also cautioned that administrative delays could slow down the distribution of these funds.

Republicans are advocating for a short-term funding bill to allow lawmakers more time to reach a broader spending agreement. However, Democrats have repeatedly rejected this proposal, seeking concessions on healthcare-related issues. Jeffries has indicated that Democrats are maintaining this position, despite the potential negative consequences of the ongoing shutdown.

He said his party will not support any bill that slashes the healthcare of American people.
