A woman has been arrested after leaving her baby in a New York City subway station.

Assa Diawara, who lives in Queens, was taken into custody early Wednesday morning. She is accused of putting her newborn daughter in danger and leaving her alone.

The baby was found Monday at the 34th Street-Penn Station subway stop, which is a very busy place.

Police say they found Diawara by watching security camera footage. The video showed her carrying something wrapped up like a baby.

Detectives followed her to Queens and found a neighbor who recognized her from the video. Diawara then told the police that she had left her baby. It’s not clear why she did it.

The baby is now safe and doing well in the hospital.

An official called it a “Miracle on 34th Street.”

Workers from the city are making sure the baby is taken care of.

New York has a law that allows parents to leave newborns at certain safe places, like fire stations or hospitals, without getting in trouble. The baby must be less than 30 days old.
