TIFTON, Ga. — What began as a routine warrant service on a quiet Friday morning in early December spiraled into a life-altering ordeal for two local detectives and a haunting end for the man accused of shooting them. In a case that gripped small-town Georgia, 35-year-old Davy Deonte Royal died while in custody at the Coffee County Jail days after allegedly opening fire on Tifton police investigators.
Shortly before 11 a.m. on Dec. 5, officers from the Tifton Police Department, supported by agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, knocked on the door at Royal’s home on the 800 block of Lee Avenue to serve a search warrant. According to officials, the lawmen announced themselves before Royal suddenly opened fire, catching the team off guard. Two investigators, later identified as Detective Michael Gaskins and Detective Jerry Fulford, were struck by gunfire in the exchange and rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

Neighbors who had been sipping coffee and commuting to work were met with chaos as the sound of gunfire echoed down the street, followed by a heavy law enforcement presence. Royal reportedly retreated deeper into the residence, barricading himself inside and triggering an hours-long standoff. Roadblocks went up, tactical units surrounded the property, and tense negotiations unfolded before he ultimately surrendered without further violence later that afternoon.
Law enforcement wasted no time booking Royal into the Coffee County Jail later that day. He faced a litany of serious charges: two counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, five counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, and five counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Bond was set at none as investigators continued piecing together the dramatic events.
In the days that followed, both wounded detectives were reported to be on the road to recovery. Community support poured in, with local residents and neighboring agencies organizing motorcades and prayer vigils to honor them as they began their healing journeys. One officer has since returned home, greeted by cheers and heartfelt signs of support from the Tifton community.
But on Dec. 8, the narrative took a grim turn. Royal was found unresponsive in his cell at the Coffee County Jail, prompting immediate medical attention and transport to the Coffee Regional Medical Center. Despite life-saving efforts, he later died. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has since revealed that Royal’s death was the result of self-inflicted injuries, a finding that now places the case under dual investigation by the GBI — both for the original shooting and the in-custody death.
As investigators continue to review every detail, the tight-knit community of Tifton is left with a complex story of violence, survival, and loss — one that has stirred deep reflection on the risks law enforcement officers face and the unpredictable paths of justice.
