Tiger Woods has spent much of his life under the world’s gaze — for his remarkable achievements on the golf course and, at times, for the personal struggles that unfolded away from it.
Last week, the legendary golfer again found himself in the headlines after a car crash in Florida led to his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Authorities say the incident happened on the afternoon of March 27 on Jupiter Island, a quiet stretch of coastline north of Palm Beach where Woods has long maintained a residence.
A sudden crash on a familiar road
According to investigators in Martin County, Woods was driving his Range Rover when it struck a Ford F-150 pickup truck that was towing a trailer.
Deputies say Woods later explained that he had briefly looked down at his phone while adjusting the radio. In that moment, he did not notice the truck ahead had slowed.
Trying to avoid a direct collision, he steered into the oncoming lane. But the maneuver wasn’t enough.
The SUV clipped the trailer, causing Woods’ vehicle to roll onto its driver’s side.
The driver of the pickup truck, along with a passerby, rushed to help. They managed to pull Woods out of the SUV through the passenger side.
Signs that raised concern
When deputies arrived, they began speaking with Woods while assessing the situation.
According to the probable cause affidavit, officers noticed several signs that suggested possible impairment.
They reported his eyes appeared bloodshot and glassy, and his pupils were described as extremely dilated. Officers also noted he was unusually talkative and experienced persistent hiccups during the investigation.
At one point, Woods was sitting in the back of a patrol vehicle with the air conditioning running, yet deputies said he appeared to be sweating heavily.
Woods told authorities he had not consumed alcohol that day. However, he acknowledged taking prescription medication earlier that morning.
During the investigation, officers found two hydrocodone pills — an opioid pain medication — in his pants pocket.
Field test and arrest
Deputies asked Woods to perform a sobriety exercise at the scene.
According to the report, he appeared to limp and stumbled to the right while walking. Officers also observed that he was wearing a compression sock on his right knee and appeared to have an existing leg injury.
Woods told deputies he has undergone seven back surgeries and more than 20 operations on his leg over the years.
After observing his performance, a deputy concluded Woods’ ability to safely operate a vehicle appeared impaired.
He was placed under arrest on suspicion of DUI with property damage.
Woods was later released from the Martin County Jail the same day after posting bond.
A history shaped by injuries
The crash is not the first time Woods has faced a serious accident.
In 2021, he suffered severe leg injuries in a rollover crash in Los Angeles that required extensive surgery and months of rehabilitation.
More than a decade earlier, in 2009, Woods was involved in another highly publicized crash near his Florida home.
Those incidents — along with years of physical strain from professional golf — have left Woods with a long history of surgeries and chronic pain.
Why the story resonates
For many fans, Woods remains one of the most recognizable figures in modern sports.
His career transformed golf, bringing global attention to the game and inspiring a generation of young athletes.
But his story has also been shaped by recovery — from injuries, setbacks, and the pressures of a life lived publicly.
Incidents like last week’s crash serve as reminders that even the most accomplished athletes face the same vulnerabilities as anyone else, particularly when it comes to health, medication, and the demands of daily life.
A moment of pause
For now, the legal process will determine what comes next.
But the moment also adds another chapter to a long and complicated public life — one that has alternated between extraordinary triumph and difficult personal moments.
For Woods, whose career has already spanned decades, it’s another reminder of how quickly life can shift off the course.
