Officers from HPD responded to the scene shortly after the crash occurred, finding Marquez-Vargas lying in the roadway. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, the young man had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have managed to reconstruct the sequence of events: Marquez-Vargas, riding his motorcycle westbound on Highway 26, rear-ended another vehicle traveling in the same direction. That impact apparently caused the rider to lose control, become separated from his motorcycle, and be struck by two additional westbound vehicles. All drivers in the crash remained at the scene and are cooperating with authorities.
Preliminary findings from HPD suggest that speed was a contributing factor in the collision. The involvement of the Washington County Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team (CART) underscores the seriousness of the investigation.
