Two police officers were tragically killed while responding to a domestic disturbance in Utah. Authorities reported that a man was taken into custody after bystanders convinced him to drop his weapon.
The fallen officers were identified as Sgt. Lee Sorensen, 56, and Officer Eric Estrada, 31, both from the Tremonton-Garland Police Department. In addition to the officers, a sheriff’s deputy and a police dog were also injured when they arrived on the scene. Fortunately, the deputy has since been released from the hospital, while the dog remains hospitalized but is in stable condition.
“This is a heartbreaking loss,” said Police Chief Chad Reyes from the neighboring Brigham City, emphasizing the dangers that officers face with domestic disturbance calls. He noted that these situations are often unpredictable and can quickly become life-threatening.
The incident began when multiple 911 hang-up calls were made from a residence. The first officer on the scene was speaking to someone when the suspect emerged brandishing a firearm. Tragically, the officer was shot and killed, and immediately after, a second officer who arrived to assist was also targeted and lost his life.
After the shooting, witnesses were able to convince the gunman to surrender, allowing a significant police response to secure the area. SWAT teams were dispatched to ensure there was no ongoing threat.
The home where this terrible event took place was secured with crime scene tape, and the presence of children’s toys on the front lawn underscored the family aspect of this tragedy.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed his condolences, calling the night “terrible and tragic.” He stated that the state mourns the loss of these brave officers and directed that flags be flown at half-staff in their memory.
The suspect now faces charges of aggravated murder, although details regarding the identity of the injured deputy and the suspect have not been released. Sgt. Sorensen had dedicated 17 years to law enforcement, recently being promoted to sergeant. Officer Estrada was known for his commitment to his family and community, enjoying his role as a patrol officer.
Tremonton, a small city of about 13,000 residents, is located approximately 75 miles north of Salt Lake City. It serves as a popular stop for travelers heading to renowned national parks and is known for its vibrant murals that attract visitors year-round.
