Over the weekend, two police officers in Utah were shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call. The incident happened on Sunday, August 17, when the police received multiple 911 hang-up calls.
The officers, identified as Sergeant Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada, were tragically killed during the response. A man was arrested at the scene shortly after the shooting, according to a statement from the police department.
Reports indicate that as the first officer was talking to a resident about the disturbance, the suspect came out and opened fire. It hasn’t been confirmed yet whether the first officer on the scene was Sergeant Sorensen or Officer Estrada.
Following the initial attack, a second officer arrived at the location and was also shot by the same suspect. Additionally, a deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, who came to aid, was injured when gunfire struck his vehicle, affecting both him and his police dog. Both are recovering in fair condition.
The suspect has been identified as Ryan Michael Bate and faces serious charges, including capital aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. Bystanders helped convince him to surrender, leading to his arrest.
