President Trump Considers Meeting with Kim Jong Un

While traveling to Asia, President Donald Trump mentioned he might meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the border area between North and South Korea.

Speaking to reporters, President Trump said he would be open to the meeting, noting he gets along well with Kim Jong Un. He also acknowledged North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.

A South Korean official has encouraged both leaders to meet. A White House official stated that President Trump has always been open to talking with Kim Jong Un.

During his first term, President Trump met with Kim Jong Un three times. These meetings helped to calm things down in the Korean Peninsula. The United States’ approach to North Korea has not changed.

President Trump’s current trip includes visits to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. He is also scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss trade and security.

In 2018, President Trump and Kim Jong Un had a historic first meeting between leaders of both countries in Singapore where they agreed to improve relationships. Another meeting in 2019 in Vietnam did not result in an agreement. Later in June 2019, President Trump met Kim again at the DMZ, becoming the first U.S. president to step into North Korea.
