    Venezuela Deal Reached?

Early Saturday morning, a decisive action took place in Venezuela. U.S. forces successfully apprehended Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, bringing them to New York City to face potential charges related to narcotics and other offenses.

This swift operation, dubbed “Absolute Resolve,” reflects a strategy of targeted action to address threats with minimal cost. It’s been reported that no American lives were lost during the mission. With Maduro removed from power, there is renewed hope for the Venezuelan people to build better lives. The true success of this operation hinges on what follows in Venezuela.

Maduro’s policies led Venezuela down a destructive path. Millions of Venezuelans were forced to flee his socialist regime, while his administration allowed criminals to operate freely within the country.

Beyond his borders, Maduro stirred up unrest in the region. He threatened neighboring Guyana and its natural resources. He also aligned himself with regimes in Cuba, Beijing, and Moscow. His removal represents a positive step forward for stability in Latin America.

The recent events also send a clear message to other nations. Maduro’s meeting with a Chinese envoy shortly before his capture underscores the limits of Beijing’s influence in the Western Hemisphere. The United States can protect its interests and allies in the region, and there is only one global superpower with the ability to do so.

Some may express concerns about the long-term effects of this regime change. One concern is that some might say other countries might try to copy what happen.

However, such concerns misunderstand the nature of international relations. Nations that seek to undermine the international order will always find excuses for their actions. The key factor is the strength and resolve of the United States and its allies to deter aggression, not adherence to international norms.

The immediate priority is to establish a stable and effective government in Venezuela. A descent into chaos would exacerbate existing problems, such as drug trafficking and refugee flows, threatening regional security. Supporting a legitimate government that can restore order and promote prosperity will be crucial for the well-being of Venezuelans and their neighbors.

The situation in Venezuela echoes a historical precedent. Over a century ago, the United States recognized the danger of foreign powers meddling in Latin America. Secretary of State Richard Olney declared that the United States was “practically sovereign on this continent.” This principle, later known as the Roosevelt Corollary, guided American foreign policy.

Just as in the past, the United States must remain vigilant in defending its interests and promoting stability in the Western Hemisphere. The recent action in Venezuela demonstrates a commitment to this principle and a vision for a brighter future for the region.
