Early on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2025, the community of West Alexandria, Ohio, was shaken by the devastating news that 20-year-old Shelby Haynes had died in a single-vehicle crash in nearby Preble County. Deputies from the Preble County Sheriff’s Office say they were called just before 5:30 a.m. to the intersection of U.S. 35 and Quinn Road after reports of a vehicle leaving the roadway.

According to investigators, Shelby was driving a 2017 Cadillac XT5 east on U.S. 35 when the vehicle veered off the road, struck a culvert, overturned, and came to rest in a nearby parking lot—where it also caught fire. Despite the rapid arrival of first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her remains were later taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for autopsy.

Sheriff Mike Simpson of Preble County noted that alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, though the investigation is still ongoing.

Those who knew Shelby describe her as someone whose presence lit up a room—a kind daughter, a loyal friend, someone with big dreams and a generous heart. Her passing has left a tangible emptiness in the lives of many in her circle.

In a quiet West Alexandria street, conversations that once hummed with Shelby’s laughter are now punctuated by memories. Friends recall her adventurous spirit, the way she cared for others without hesitation, and how her warm smile made even ordinary days feel brighter.

As her family begins the painful journey of navigating life without her, they cling to those memories—her kindness, her joy, her love freely given. They say the imprint she left on those around her will forever remain.

Though Shelby is gone too soon, the hope is that she will always be remembered—for her heart, her light, and the way she touched lives. Rest in peace, Shelby.
