ARMSTRONG COUNTY, PA (WTAJ) — A 39-year-old woman from western Pennsylvania has been charged with criminal homicide, involuntary manslaughter, and multiple counts of abuse of a corpse after the remains of four infants were discovered in a home she had been evicted from last month.

    What Happened

Jessica Marie Mauthe was arrested after her former landlord, who was cleaning out the house in Cadogan Township, called police on September 13. While cleaning out a closet, the landlord discovered a foul-smelling trash bag containing something wrapped in towels that was decomposing. Upon further investigation, authorities found the remains of three additional infants in the attic, in tote bags, wrapped in towels, and inside plastic bags.

Mauthe is facing multiple charges, including criminal homicide for the death of one infant a year ago, involuntary manslaughter for the death of another infant approximately six years ago, and four counts each of concealing the death of a child and abuse of a corpse.

    Mauthe’s Account

Mauthe allegedly told investigators that about a year ago, after giving birth to one of the infants, she held the baby until it stopped making noises and breathing. In another incident, she claimed that after giving birth to another child six years ago, the baby whimpered, and she passed out on the floor. Upon waking, she found the baby beneath her, not breathing.

    What’s Next

Mauthe is currently being held in the Armstrong County Jail without bail. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 30. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case and are urging anyone with further information to contact the Pennsylvania State Police in Kittanning at (724) 543-2011.

    Closing Line

This story may be updated as more information becomes available on the investigation and court proceedings.
