The peaceful setting of Norris Lake turned tragic early Saturday morning when two vessels collided near the Highway 33 Bridge in Union County, Tennessee, leaving one young man dead and two others injured. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) confirmed the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. and that recovery efforts and investigation are still underway.

According to TWRA, one boat carried two people, both of whom were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment following the crash. The second vessel had a single occupant who was initially unaccounted for after the collision.

Tragically, the missing boater was later confirmed as 25-year-old James Bailey of Maynardville. His body was recovered from the lake and sent to the medical examiner’s office for autopsy.

TWRA noted that this marks the 26th fatal boating accident in Tennessee this year. Officials have not yet released detailed information about how the collision occurred, or whether factors like speed, weather or alcohol played a role.

The incident has sent ripples of grief through the Union County community. Friends and family of Bailey are left with the shock of losing a young life in what had been a routine morning on the water. For others, it is a fallen reminder of the risks inherent in boating—even in familiar waters.

TWRA is urging all boaters to double-check their safety gear, adhere to speed limits and maintain vigilance—especially near structures like bridges where traffic patterns and underwater hazards can be unpredictable.

As the investigation continues, many are left waiting for answers: what caused the boats to collide, whether either boat was impaired, and what safety measures might prevent such a tragedy from happening again. In the meantime, authorities say this heartbreaking incident is a sober reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on the water.
