MORGANTON, N.C. — The small community of Morganton is reeling after the unexpected death of 29-year-old Japheth Jesse Obanner, who was struck and killed by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 70 near Snowhill Church Road on the evening of Saturday, November 8, 2025.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), the crash occurred at approximately 6:08 p.m. when Obanner was walking in the roadway in a dark-clothed state in an unlit stretch of the highway and was struck by an eastbound 2001 Ford F550 driven by 75-year-old Joan Marie Carter of South Dakota. Carter was uninjured in the incident. Investigators determined that both pedestrian impairment and the fact that Obanner was walking in the roadway were contributing factors.

Following a review of the scene and all available evidence, troopers confirmed that no charges will be filed in connection with the crash. While that decision may bring clarity, it hardly eases the sting of loss felt by the many who knew Obanner. Nearly every account describes him as a caring, humble young man who greeted friends and strangers alike with a warm smile.

Friends and family shared memories of his kindness, his strong spirit and his devotion to those he loved. In many stories he comes across as the kind of person you could count on—someone whose laughter, generosity and quiet confidence left an imprint in the lives of others. His time here was far too short, but his presence left a lasting mark.

In this moment of grief, the Morganton community is focusing not on the circumstances of how he died, but on how he lived—with love, compassion and a big, open heart. The crash may have taken his life in an instant, but to those who knew him, the story of Japheth Jesse Obanner is one of light, connection and kindness.

His memory now joins the fabric of this town—quietly, kindly—reminding others to check on their neighbors, to reach out when someone seems off, and to carry ourselves a little brighter. Rest in peace, Japheth; you left us too soon, but you won’t be forgotten.
