Rachel Hoeft dies in crash, Brooklyn man faces felony charges in fatal crash

A 20-year-old driver has been charged in connection with a fatal crash in Rutland a month ago. According to the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office, the collision happened in the 300 block of Kegonsa Lake Road on Aug. 22 around 9:40 p.m.

The woman, Rachel Hoeft, 33, of Fort Atkinson, was pronounced dead at the scene, the medical examiner’s office said.

Hoft was a passenger in the car and died Aug. 27 at a nearby hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.

Elise Shaffer, who serves as public information officer for the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that the driver, Darien Johnson, was taken to the Dane County Jail.

Court records show he is charged with homicide by impaired driving. Last Monday, he made his first court appearance, and the court decided he would be required to post $100,000 cash bail. He is expected to appear in court again for a preliminary hearing.
