A pro-Israel demonstration in Newton, Massachusetts, became violent on Thursday evening, prompting the arrest of a 47-year-old Iraq War veteran.
Scott Hayes of Framingham is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as a violation of a constitutional right resulting in injury, after reportedly shooting a man who tackled him.
Hayes appeared in Newton District Court on Friday afternoon and was freed on a $5,000 bond. According to local media sources, the court ordered Hayes to wear a GPS tracking device and obey a curfew so that he may continue working.
The commotion began around 6:40 p.m. near the junction of Washington and Harvard streets when a man who was not affiliated with the event crossed the street and struck Hayes.
The victim has life-threatening injuries and is being treated at a local hospital. They just arraigned Scott Hayes and released him on a $5,000 bail.
They simply charged him with assault and battery using a deadly weapon. They had not read the preceding accusation indicated. An application for a criminal complaint against the anti-Israel individual has been filed.
