Mild Earthquake Shakes New York Area
A small earthquake shook the New York metropolitan region on Saturday night. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake had a magnitude of 3.0.
The tremor occurred in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, which is located less than 8 miles from Central Park, and it struck at a depth of about 6.2 miles. One resident in Brooklyn described the sensation as a brief sway, lasting just a moment.
As word of the earthquake spread, social media was buzzing with reactions from those who felt it. The official account for the Empire State Building even chimed in, proclaiming, “I AM FINE” on the platform X.
This quake was significantly milder compared to a stronger 4.8-magnitude quake that hit Tewksbury, New Jersey, in 2024. Generally, a 3.0-magnitude quake is not strong enough to cause harm, but such mild tremors are relatively uncommon in the Northeast.
According to New York City Emergency Management, there were no immediate reports of serious damage from the recent quake.
