Tragic Shipwreck Claims Lives of Migrants Off Yemen’s Coast
A boat capsized near Yemen’s southern coast over the weekend, resulting in a heartbreaking loss of life. According to the United Nations migration agency, 68 African migrants are confirmed dead, while 74 others remain missing.
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of maritime tragedies that have affected countless migrants, primarily from Africa, who are fleeing war and poverty in search of better opportunities in the Gulf Arab nations. On board were 154 Ethiopian migrants, who were attempting to make the perilous journey across the Gulf of Aden.
Officials reported that 54 bodies washed ashore in the Khanfar district, with an additional 14 found and taken to a morgue in the nearby provincial capital of Zinjibar. Only 12 individuals survived the harrowing ordeal, with the rest presumed dead.
In response to the disaster, the Abyan security directorate launched a significant search-and-rescue operation, highlighting the widespread nature of the tragedy as bodies were scattered across a large area.
Yemen continues to be a crucial pathway for migrants from East Africa seeking employment. Despite over ten years of civil conflict, many still turn to smugglers, boarding overcrowded and dangerous vessels to attempt the journey.
This latest incident adds to the growing number of migrants who have lost their lives at sea. Earlier this year, several shipwrecks were reported off Yemen, resulting in numerous fatalities and the disappearance of many more.
In 2024, reports show that over 60,000 migrants arrived in Yemen, a decrease from 97,200 in the previous year, likely due to intensified patrols in the area. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for safer migration routes and comprehensive solutions to the root causes prompting such desperate journeys.
