On Saturday evening in Beckley, West Virginia, a tragic collision claimed the life of retired local resident William Clark, aged 72. Just before 8 p.m., he was struck on the 3600-block of Robert C. Byrd Drive, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, according to the Beckley Police Department (BPD).

Responding officers and emergency crews raced to the scene, finding Mr. Clark in critical condition. He was rushed to a local hospital, but despite efforts to save him, officials confirmed his passing. Witnesses told investigators that the vehicle involved never stopped — instead, it continued heading south on Robert C. Byrd Drive, prompting a wide search by law-enforcement.

Investigators from the BPD, with assistance from the West Virginia State Police, launched a detailed crash reconstruction. They gathered physical evidence, reviewed witness statements and combed through surveillance from nearby businesses and traffic-cameras along the suspected route. Their efforts paid off: authorities say they have identified a person believed to be connected to the incident, and the vehicle in question has been seized for forensic examination.

Although no arrest has yet been made, police say charges are expected pending completion of the review. The department expressed gratitude for tips and cooperation from residents who helped steer the investigation forward. In a public message, the BPD described the loss of Mr. Clark as “deeply saddening” for the whole community and extended heartfelt condolences to his family.

In the wake of the tragedy, local conversations have turned to pedestrian and driver safety along Robert C. Byrd Drive. Community members are urging improvements such as enhanced lighting, clearer crosswalks and stronger enforcement of hit-and-run laws to prevent similar heartbreaks. The incident has injected fresh urgency into long-standing safety concerns.

Authorities are still asking anyone who may have additional information or video footage related to the incident to contact the Beckley Police Department. They reminded drivers to stay alert, slow down and watch for pedestrians — and urged all members of the community to help keep the roads safe.
