Marcus Leonard Smith Obituary, Death; – A man from Cincinnati has lost his life following a police shooting that occurred after he allegedly fired at officers during a traffic stop in Akron.
The incident took place at approximately 8:45 a.m. when the Akron Police Department responded to a report regarding a stolen vehicle. Officers located the vehicle near the intersection of Kenmore and Lakeshore boulevards and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
According to Akron police, the driver then discharged a firearm at the officers, who subsequently returned fire, striking the driver at least once.
Despite efforts by the police to administer lifesaving measures, the driver succumbed to his injuries. The Summit County medical examiner has identified the deceased as 39-year-old Marcus Leonard Smith from Cincinnati. An autopsy is set to be conducted on Tuesday.
In accordance with departmental policy, three officers involved in the incident, with service records ranging from nine to 30 years, have been placed on paid administrative leave. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation has arrived at the scene and is currently conducting an investigation.
Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Ohio attorney general’s office for review before being presented to the Summit County grand jury for assessment.
