Patricia Burt Obituary, Death; – A 78-year-old woman from Lee County passed away on Tuesday, following an attack by her neighbor’s dogs the previous day. The deceased has been identified as Patricia Burt, as reported by WRBL. She succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning at Piedmont Midtown Medical Center in Columbus.
Burt marks the third individual to lose their life due to a potential animal attack in Alabama within the first two months of 2025. Earlier this month, a 46-year-old woman was tragically killed by a pack of dogs at a residence in Tuscaloosa County. The incident occurred in the yard of the dogs’ owners. The victim had visited the property to feed the dogs while the owner was away.
In a separate incident last week, a 51-year-old man was discovered deceased beneath his vehicle. Authorities reported that Steven Kyle Satterfield was found dead on Monday at his property off Highway 278 in Piedmont, having sustained multiple injuries from his hogs.
Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown indicated that it remains uncertain whether Satterfield experienced a medical emergency prior to being attacked by the hogs or if the hogs were directly responsible for his death.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirmed that the attack occurred on Monday on Lee Road 356 in the Beulah community. Upon arrival, deputies found Burt injured by two dogs and promptly transported her to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation suggests that Burt had gone to visit her neighbor. According to Sheriff Jones, the neighbor’s two Cane Corso dogs were secured in a containment kennel but managed to escape when Burt arrived, leading to the attack.
The Cane Corso is a breed of mastiff originating from Italy. Both the dogs’ owner and Burt’s husband attempted to intervene during the attack, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Ultimately, Burt’s husband shot and killed both dogs, as stated by the sheriff.
“This was an absolutely horrific incident,” Jones remarked. The remains of the dogs have been sent to a veterinarian in Opelika for a rabies examination, as mandated by state law. An autopsy for Burt will be conducted by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
Sheriff Jones noted that the investigation is still ongoing, adding, “It does not appear that there was any criminal intent here, obviously.”
