LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Several families have been displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Louisville’s Poplar Hills neighborhood.
Crews were called the 700 block of Huntington Park Drive around 8 p.m. Thursday on a report of an apartment fire, according to Fern Creek Fire Assistant Chief Dewayne Hutchens. That’s off Poplar Level Road.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from a 2-story apartment with people trapped on the second floor balcony. Hutchens said firefighters rescued two people from the balcony using ground ladders.
About 20 firefighters helped evacuate other residents, and were able to get the fire under control within 20 minutes.
There were no injuries to residents or firefighters, but a family pet was treated for smoke inhalation, and released back to its owner, Hutchens said.
One of the units has heavy fire damage, and many of the other units have water and smoke damage.
Hutchens said the American Red Cross is helping the displaced residents find temporary housing.
The cause of the fire in unknown and remains under investigation.
