Born on May 10, 2001, in Norwich, Connecticut, Hazel was the daughter of Jessica Lunt and the late Russell Banning. Named after her great-grandmothers, Agnes Hazel Lunt and Floreanna Bousquet, Hazel’s life was one filled with promise, love, and dedication to both her family and her studies.
Hazel was a remarkable young woman who stood out in many ways. She was an honor roll student who excelled academically, showing a love for learning that would guide her throughout her life. She graduated from Wildwood Christian School in 2015 and then went on to Norwich Free Academy in 2019, where she earned 19 college credits before moving on to Three Rivers Community College. Hazel graduated from Three Rivers in 2024, with plans to continue her education in order to become a social worker, demonstrating her deep desire to help others.
Growing up, Hazel was an avid reader and loved spending time at the library. She also enjoyed the beach and had a special fondness for American Girl Dolls, which brought her joy as a child. These simple pleasures shaped the compassionate and thoughtful individual she grew to become. Hazel’s family meant everything to her. She is survived by her mother, Jessica Lunt, and stepfather, Odir Pontes, along with her siblings Adrianna (Kevin), Aleesa (Nasiah), Shayla, Anthony, and Malachi.
Hazel’s role as “Auntie Hazel” was one she cherished, and she loved spending time with her nephews Josiah, Yadiel, Caleb, and Roman Justiniano, as well as Nasiah Figueroa Jr. Her deep love for her family was evident in everything she did. In addition to her family, Hazel was in a loving relationship with her partner, Breydan Barboza. Her passing is not only a loss to her family but to all who knew her. Hazel’s bright spirit, caring nature, and dreams for the future have left a lasting impact.
Hazel is predeceased by her grandfather, David Lunt Sr., and her father, Russell Banning. While her time on this earth was far too short, Hazel’s legacy will continue through the many lives she touched. As friends and family remember Hazel, they will hold on to the memories of a young woman who was determined, loving, and full of potential.
