The Memphis music community is mourning the loss of local musician Blake Rhea, who was tragically shot and killed outside a Midtown bar early Wednesday morning.
Memphis Police have confirmed the arrest of Edward Wurl, 51, in connection with the shooting. Wurl has been charged with First Degree Murder and Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon.
The incident took place outside Louis Connolly’s Bar, located at 322 South Cleveland Street in the Central Gardens area. According to court records, Rhea and Wurl engaged in a verbal dispute inside the bar before tensions spilled outside.
Surveillance footage reportedly captures Rhea walking toward his vehicle as Wurl follows, initially brandishing a knife. The two struggled briefly near Rhea’s car, after which Wurl allegedly drew a firearm and fatally shot Rhea.
Police responded to the scene around 1:05 a.m., but Rhea was pronounced dead upon their arrival. Wurl, who left the scene shortly after the shooting, was apprehended by police on Thursday. Authorities believe that a past romantic relationship involving the same woman may have played a role in the conflict between the two men.
Court documents reveal that Wurl has a prior criminal record, including a burglary and unlawful wounding conviction in 1994. As a convicted felon, he is legally prohibited from possessing firearms, adding another charge to his current list of offenses. Police are now reviewing further evidence to understand the events leading up to the fatal encounter.
News of Rhea’s death has left Midtown residents and Memphis’ music community in shock. Known for his talent and dedication, Rhea was an active contributor to the local music scene, and many friends and fans have expressed their grief on social media. “Blake was a bright light in the Memphis music community, and his loss is deeply felt by all of us,” one local musician shared.
The investigation is ongoing as detectives piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Wurl remains in custody and is expected to face further legal proceedings in the coming weeks.
As the community mourns, police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward. This tragic loss has sparked discussions around bar security and safety in Midtown, with residents advocating for increased measures to prevent future incidents.
