Victor Rendon Jr., aged 34, lost his life after a standoff with deputies outside his former girlfriend’s home in Spring Valley. The incident unfolded on Friday afternoon when the woman called 911, reporting that Rendon had entered her residence uninvited, armed with a pistol, and was intoxicated. She also noted that he had been struggling with mental health issues.
The situation escalated when deputies responded and attempted to make contact with Rendon, who fired several shots. After a tense standoff, Rendon exited the home, allegedly pointing his weapon at law enforcement officers, prompting them to fire on him.
He was declared dead at the scene. Authorities have identified the deputies involved as Evan Carey, Chalit Carranto, Thomas Cook, Darryl Patmon, Frank Spinelli, Derek Trumbo, and Manuel Zamora, with varying lengths of service in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
The event began at approximately 3:15 p.m. when Rendon’s ex-girlfriend made the emergency call, and it concluded several hours later when the deputies took action. The investigation into the incident has been handed over to the San Diego Police Department to avoid conflicts of interest, as is customary with law enforcement-involved shootings.
