Babette “Betsy” A. Bilyew, a beloved and feisty force of nature from Huntington, Indiana, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 20, 2024, leaving behind a profound legacy in the community she helped build and support. Born on Christmas Eve in 1951, Betsy’s entrance into the world was as unique and memorable as her life. It is said that she arrived in a festive Christmas box, much to the surprise (and perhaps slight annoyance) of her older siblings, Barry and Claudette, who jokingly pleaded with Santa to take her back. But from the moment she arrived, Betsy became a whirlwind of energy, talent, and love—a true one-of-a-kind individual whose presence will be deeply missed.
Betsy was a tireless entrepreneur who dedicated herself to building businesses that served the Huntington community. Her ventures, including Plants Unlimited, Services+, and Betsy’s Bouquet, were more than just businesses; they were extensions of her vibrant personality and commitment to her community. Known for her sharp wit, infectious energy, and unwavering determination, Betsy quickly became a key figure in Huntington, loved by all who crossed her path.
In addition to her entrepreneurial spirit, Betsy made her mark in the real estate industry. She was a top-producing agent at both REMAX and Century 21, where her face became iconic throughout the town—featured on billboards, grocery carts, and even a few wanted signs, often to the amusement of her friends and clients. Her success in real estate was a testament to her commitment, drive, and connection with people. But Betsy’s true success wasn’t measured just by numbers—it was about the relationships she cultivated and the lives she impacted.
Betsy’s love for animals was a cornerstone of her life. Her home was never short of furry companions, and she dedicated a significant portion of her time and resources to the cause of animal welfare. In particular, Betsy was the co-founder of Helping Paws Pet Haven, a no-kill cat shelter. Through this initiative, she helped rescue, care for, and rehome countless cats, providing them with a second chance at a loving home. Betsy was passionate about giving animals the care and attention they needed, and her impact on the local pet rescue community will not be forgotten.
Her deep affection for animals wasn’t limited to just her work with the shelter. She lived her life as a proud advocate for the well-being of all creatures. Betsy’s generosity extended far beyond her human relationships and into her love for animals, making her a beloved figure in the local animal welfare community.
Betsy was known for her boundless generosity and her unwavering belief in second chances. She opened her heart and her home to those in need, whether it was offering a place to stay, financing a car, or simply sharing a meal. Holidays were often celebrated with anyone who found themselves without a place to go, as Betsy embraced those who felt alone and welcomed them with open arms. For Betsy, giving wasn’t a one-time act—it was a way of life, and she believed that everyone deserved a chance to thrive, regardless of their past.
Her willingness to invest in people and her belief in the goodness of humanity were qualities that made her not only a successful businesswoman but also a cherished friend, confidant, and mentor to many. Betsy’s legacy is one of compassion, kindness, and the unyielding belief that everyone has the potential for redemption and growth.
Betsy lived life to the fullest, and her spirit was as vibrant as her many interests. A self-described social butterfly, she was always surrounded by friends, family, and colleagues. Betsy had a zest for life that was contagious, and her warmth and charm made her the center of attention wherever she went. Whether she was playing games with friends, hosting community events, or simply enjoying a quiet evening with her cats, Betsy was always engaged in the moment.
In addition to her many entrepreneurial endeavors, Betsy had an unconventional side. She was known for her unique support of the tobacco industry in the 1990s, where she even created a “smoking youth ministry.” While this may seem unusual to some, it speaks to Betsy’s ability to embrace the unorthodox and her genuine desire to create spaces where people could come together, have fun, and be themselves.
Betsy’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life was one of her defining traits. She wasn’t afraid to be herself, and in doing so, she inspired others to do the same. Her authenticity and fearlessness set her apart, and those who knew her felt truly blessed to be in her presence.
As we remember Betsy, it is clear that her passing is not just a moment of loss—it is a reminder of the vibrant and meaningful life she lived. A celebration of Betsy’s life will take place on Sunday, December 15, 2024, beginning at 3:00 pm at the beautiful Chapel Road Retreat in Andrews, Indiana (4214 S 900 W). The event will continue with a special dinner at 5:00 pm, catered by JB’s “Cuisine Machine,” providing an opportunity for friends and family to gather, share stories, and celebrate the remarkable woman Betsy was. Everyone is welcome to join in this celebration of her life, and those who knew her are encouraged to bring a story, a quote, or a picture to share as a tribute to her enduring legacy.
In lieu of flowers, Betsy’s family requests that memorial donations be made to Helping Paws Pet Haven, the organization she co-founded and worked so tirelessly to support. These donations will ensure that Betsy’s passion for animal welfare continues to make a difference in the lives of countless pets in need.
Betsy’s legacy is one of compassion, hard work, and a deep love for those around her. Her entrepreneurial success, her advocacy for animals, and her unflagging generosity have left an indelible mark on the Huntington community. While she may no longer be with us physically, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched.
As we reflect on her life, we remember the many ways she made the world a better place. Betsy was more than just a businesswoman, animal lover, and friend—she was a force of nature whose influence will be felt for years to come. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and determination will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Rest in peace, Betsy. You will be deeply missed, but your light will never fade.
