It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that the family of Mr. William Neil Utt announces his peaceful passing at his home in Mount Airy, North Carolina, on the morning of Friday, August 1, 2025. He was 72 years old. Surrounded by his loving family in his final moments, William—affectionately known as “Neil” by many—left this world in the way he lived: gently, quietly, and wrapped in the love of those who mattered most.

    What Happened

Neil’s life was a true reflection of strength, love, and faith. A devoted family man and a respected member of the community, Neil will be missed deeply by all who knew him. His passing marks the end of a chapter filled with dedication, wisdom, and kindness, but his memory will continue to inspire his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched.

    Who Was William Neil Utt?

Born on September 14, 1952, in Surry County, North Carolina, Neil was the beloved son of the late Carl and Virginia Utt. Raised in a family that valued faith, kindness, and hard work, Neil carried those values throughout his life. From a young age, he showed a remarkable ability to connect with others, leaving a lasting impact wherever he went.

Neil graduated from North Surry High School in 1970 and embarked on a fulfilling career in the telecommunications industry. For over 35 years, he worked for Surry Telephone Membership Corporation, earning a reputation as a loyal, dependable technician. His calm demeanor and problem-solving nature made him a beloved colleague and a trusted friend. Even in retirement, Neil remained a cherished figure, and his wisdom continued to be sought by those who knew him.

    Family and Legacy

Neil’s greatest pride and joy were his family. In 1975, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Sue (Thompson) Utt. Together, they shared a remarkable 50-year journey, one marked by unwavering devotion, love, and respect. Their partnership was an enduring example of what true love and commitment look like. Though Tom preceded her in death many years ago, Almeta never ceased to speak of him with warmth and admiration. Their union brought forth a loving family that she cherished beyond measure.

Neil was a devoted father to his children, Michael and Sarah, instilling in them values of hard work, humility, and compassion. He was a proud grandfather to his grandchildren, who adored him. His role as a father and grandfather was central to his life, and he created countless cherished memories with his children and grandchildren.

    Memorial Service Details

A celebration of Neil’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Airy, North Carolina. Pastor John Mark Taylor will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 2:00 PM at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

    Final Tribute

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church or the Surry County Hospice in gratitude for the compassionate care they provided during Neil’s final days.

Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that William Neil Utt has now entered into eternal peace—reunited with loved ones gone before and cradled in the arms of his Savior. His life was a testament to quiet strength, steady love, and faithful service, and the echoes of his kindness will live on in all who had the blessing of knowing him.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” – Matthew 25:23
