Tragic Loss of Shipwreck Explorer Joe Mazraani During Diving Expedition
A well-known shipwreck explorer and the husband of a prominent New Jersey attorney has sadly passed away during a deep-sea diving expedition. Joe Mazraani, aged 47, experienced a life-threatening emergency on July 29 while diving to explore the wreck of “The Big Engine Steamer,” located about 200 miles off the eastern edge of Georges Bank.
The exact cause of Mazraani’s death has not yet been disclosed; however, his company, Atlantic Wreck Salvage, confirmed that an investigation is underway. Currently, there are no indications of diver error or equipment failure complicating the incident.
Those who knew Mazraani remember him fondly. Atlantic Wreck Salvage expressed their heartbreak, stating, “Joe was larger than life. He was kind, compassionate, and generous—a mentor, a friend, and a family man.” They highlighted his leadership and commitment to excellence in every endeavor he pursued, whether navigating deep waters or defending clients in the courtroom.
Mazraani co-owned Atlantic Wreck Salvage alongside his wife, Jennifer Sellitti, who serves as a public defender in New Jersey. Tragically, she was present on the boat when the accident occurred.
Before his untimely passing, Mazraani was captured in a final photo on the bow of the D/V Tenacious, the dive vessel he used for exploration and salvage. This image symbolizes his passion for uncovering maritime history.
Originally from Lebanon, Mazraani immigrated to the United States at the age of 15. His fascination with diving began in the mid-1990s when he became a certified diver and quickly developed a keen interest in exploring the numerous wrecks that line the Northeast coast of the U.S., particularly those near New York Harbor.
Described as someone who lived for shipwreck exploration, Mazraani held the position of president at Atlantic Wreck Salvage. The D/V Tenacious was specifically equipped for various exploration projects, including efforts to locate deep and uncharted wrecks in the North Atlantic.
Among his many accomplishments, Mazraani led expeditions to famous shipwrecks including the Italian liner SS Andrea Doria and the HMHS Britannic, the sister ship of the Titanic. His dedication to maritime conservation earned him a place as an associate member of the Boston Sea Rovers, a nonprofit organization that promotes marine education.
Mazraani’s legacy extends beyond his diving pursuits. The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender publicly honored him following his passing. “With deep sadness, we announce the loss of Joe Mazraani,” they stated. “He was a beloved partner to Public Defender Sellitti and a cherished member of both the legal and diving communities. Joe embodied kindness and courage, with a life dedicated to justice. Our hearts go out to his loved ones.”
In these moments of sorrow, the outpouring of support from colleagues and friends reflects the impact Mazraani left on those fortunate enough to know him. His adventurous spirit, commitment to his profession, and love for exploration will be remembered by many for years to come.
As an important contributor to the legal and diving fields, Mazraani’s unexpected death serves as a reminder of the risks involved in deep-sea exploration. His passion for uncovering history beneath the waves will inspire future generations to continue the journey he began.
For those who valued his friendship and presence, the loss is profound. Joe Mazraani leaves behind not just a legacy in his professional endeavors but also cherished memories to those who loved him.
