St. James-Smithtown Little League on the Brink of Greatness

In a remarkable season, the St. James-Smithtown Little League team is just one game away from fulfilling a childhood dream: playing in the Little League World Series.

The 12-year-old players have shown incredible determination throughout the season, and their efforts are about to be tested. “When I was younger, I watched the Little League World Series on TV and thought to myself, ‘I want to play in it,’” said Gary Rocco, their dedicated designated hitter. “Now, it feels like we’re almost there.”

The Bulls, as they’re affectionately known, are gearing up to face off against Fairfield National in the much-anticipated Metro regional championship game, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in Bristol, Connecticut. This is a rematch for the Bulls, who previously dominated Fairfield with a score of 6-1 earlier in the week.

“It’s the biggest game of my life,” said Jeremy Katz, the team’s starting pitcher, proving that the stakes are high. Katz, who also holds the title of New York’s home run derby champion, draws inspiration from local baseball legend Craig Biggio, and is excited about the challenge ahead. “If I could pitch a full game, it would be surreal. A shutout in the championship would be the ultimate story,” he expressed.

    Rising From Adversity

The road to this moment has not been easy. Last season, the Bulls faced a disappointing exit from the district playoffs. This year, they were once again on the brink of elimination after losing to rival West Sayville early in the summer. However, determination kicked in, and the team rallied to defeat their cross-island foes, a turning point that ignited their confidence.

“I can say those games were the hardest,” noted center fielder Chase Saxon. “But once we got past that, we thought we could make it to the state tournament. Our shoulders were up.”

Their confidence blossomed as they showcased their skills during an impressive 18-0 victory against Burrillville of Rhode Island. Team traditions, like pregame meditation sessions, have fortified their mental strength. “It really helps us calm down,” said Hunter Falcone, a fellow teammate, emphasizing how everyone on the team contributes to their success.

With a renewed spirit, the players are not only excited for the upcoming match but also committed to going all the way. Third baseman Lucas Kostas shared his thoughts: “We believe we can take it all.”

    Community Support

The entire community of Smithtown has taken notice. Former New York Mets player Frank Catalanotto, who grew up in the area and once played for the same Little League, is closely following the Bulls’ journey. “They seem like they have great momentum and can score runs,” he stated confidently, adding that he expects them to keep playing their exciting brand of baseball.

Local residents have rallied around the team, holding watch parties and expressing their excitement. “Everyone I run into can’t stop talking about it,” Catalanotto mentioned, emphasizing the unity that this Little League team has brought to the town.

    More Than Just a Game

Manager Scott Santelli, who balances coaching the team with the joy of spending time with his sons, has witnessed firsthand the growth of these young athletes. “After all the interviews and attention, it’s made me appreciate what professional athletes go through,” he reflected, drawing connections between the local team and the larger world of baseball.

The managerial role has also become a way for Santelli to bond with his boys in a unique experience that will last a lifetime. “Not many fathers get to do something like this,” he said, highlighting the deep emotional impact of this journey.

As the team prepares for the championship showdown, they carry with them not just the hopes of their community but also a spirit of resilience and camaraderie. The St. James-Smithtown Bulls are more than just a Little League team; they are a testament to hard work, community spirit, and the timeless pursuit of dreams. All eyes will be on them as they strive for victory, hoping to make their mark in Little League history.
