49ers’ Shanahan: Aiyuk Likely Out Until October

49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk Faces Uncertain Return from Injury

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to face the upcoming season without wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is not expected to return to the field anytime soon. Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs last October, which cut short his season.

In a recent press conference, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan discussed Aiyuk’s recovery along with that of rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke and safety Malik Mustapha, both of whom are also recovering from similar injuries. Shanahan, however, did not provide a clear timeline for their comebacks.

Shanahan stated, “I typically think they might return around Week 6, but that could mean Week 10 or even Week 5.” He acknowledged that while the timeline suggests a long wait, it’s not something he is overly focused on right now, emphasizing that it is certainly not Week 1.

Aiyuk Likely to Start on PUP List

Recently, indications have surfaced that Aiyuk will begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Under NFL rules, being on the PUP list would mean that Aiyuk would not be eligible to play until at least Week 5. Thus, if he starts the regular season on this list, he would miss the first four games.

Currently, Aiyuk is on the preseason PUP list. If he doesn’t return by Week 5, he could remain on the reserve list for the entire season. The most favorable scenario would see Aiyuk return to action for a significant game against the Los Angeles Rams. However, that would require a nearly full year of recovery following his injury.

A return in Week 10 would also see him missing more vital games, as he could encounter a struggle for time on the field before the team’s bye week in Week 14.

    Aiyuk’s Importance to the Team

The 49ers’ hopes for a successful season would benefit greatly from Aiyuk’s return. Last season, he had impressive numbers with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, earning him second-team All-Pro honors. This performance led to a significant contract extension worth $120 million, showcasing his value to the team.

Before his injury, Aiyuk’s production had decreased, as he finished his last season with 25 catches for 374 yards. Now, the team is eager for him to regain his All-Pro form when he is finally cleared to play.

With Deebo Samuel no longer a part of the roster after his trade, Aiyuk’s role becomes even more critical. Currently, Jauan Jennings and second-year player Ricky Pearsall are the primary options in the receiving corps. Pearsall, who had a remarkable journey last season after recovering from a gunshot wound, is coming off a year where he recorded 400 yards and three touchdowns.

    Who Will Step Up?

As the 49ers look ahead, the question arises: who will step up in Aiyuk’s absence? Jennings has been nursing a calf injury, but Shanahan confirmed that his sidelining isn’t related to any contract disputes. Meanwhile, Pearsall, chosen in the first round of the 2024 Draft, has a chance for increased exposure and responsibility while Aiyuk is out.

In another blow for the 49ers, fourth-round rookie receiver Jordan Watkins will also miss at least a month due to a high-ankle sprain. This situation puts additional pressure on Jennings and Pearsall to perform as the team’s receiving threats.

One silver lining for the 49ers has been the health of All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, who has remained injury-free during training camp. McCaffrey faced a tough 2024 season, where he managed only four games due to various injuries. His ongoing health will be crucial as the team navigates through the early part of the season without Aiyuk and potentially Jennings.

In summary, while the future remains unclear for Aiyuk, the 49ers will rely on their other players to step up as they prepare for the season ahead. The coaching staff, fans, and players alike are anxious for Aiyuk’s return, hoping to see him back on the field contributing to the team soon.
