It is with immense sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Gavin Tomlinson KFSM, former Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS), who died on 27 August 2025. Gavin’s loss is deeply felt across Derbyshire and the wider UK fire and rescue community. A true servant leader, Gavin dedicated over three decades of his life to public service, having joined Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service as a trainee firefighter on 1 September 1993. His remarkable journey through the ranks over 31 years — culminating in his appointment as Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive in 2019 — is a testament to his unwavering commitment, exceptional leadership, and profound impact on fire safety in both Derbyshire and across the nation.

    What Happened

Gavin Tomlinson’s unexpected passing has left a void in the fire and rescue community. He retired in February 2025, reflecting on a career marked by humility and service. “It has been a privilege to be the Chief Fire Officer for Derbyshire,” he said, expressing pride in the difference he made to the safety of people in his home county and across the UK. Today, those words resonate as we reflect on the lasting legacy of service, safety, and reform he leaves behind.

    Who Was Gavin Tomlinson?

Gavin’s career spanned over three decades, and he made a lasting impact on fire safety both locally and nationally. His leadership extended beyond Derbyshire, where he was awarded the King’s Fire Service Medal (KFSM) in 2023 for his distinguished service. Gavin played a critical role as the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) lead for Protection and Business Safety and recently served as Chair of the Protection and Business Safety Scrutiny Committee. His leadership helped shape major reforms in fire safety legislation in response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, driving meaningful change and enhancing public protection across the UK.

At DFRS, Gavin championed innovation, inclusivity, and continuous improvement. Under his leadership, the service earned a ‘Good’ rating from His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, reflecting a culture of accountability, transparency, and excellence.

    Public or Social Media Reaction

The news of Gavin’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and members of the fire and rescue community. Rob Taylor, the current Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive of DFRS, paid tribute to Gavin’s enduring legacy:

“Today is an immensely sad day for Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and the fire and rescue sector as we receive the sad news that our former colleague and Chief Fire Officer Gavin Tomlinson has passed away. Through his work both locally in Derbyshire and nationally, Gavin touched the lives of many people. I therefore know there will be a lot of people reading this news today who would want to join me in conveying their thoughts and sympathy to Gavin’s family.”

Official Statement or What Happens Next

An online book of condolence is being prepared for friends, colleagues, and the public to share their memories and tributes. Details of the book will be shared in due course. As we mourn Gavin’s loss, his legacy of leadership, service, and dedication will continue to shape the fire and rescue community for generations to come.

    Closing

Gavin Tomlinson’s life was one of purpose and commitment to others. May he rest in peace, and may his family find strength in the love and support of those who admired him.
