The Auburn community is reeling from the tragic loss of Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, a beloved retired Auburn University veterinary professor, who was killed on Saturday afternoon while walking her dog at Kiesel Park. She was 59 years old.

    What Happened

According to Auburn police, Dr. Schnuelle’s body was discovered in a wooded area of the park around 2 p.m. Investigators confirmed that she had been assaulted, and her red Ford F-150 pickup truck was stolen in connection with the crime. The violent incident has left residents shocked and heartbroken, as Kiesel Park had long been considered a safe and cherished community space for walking, exercising, and spending time with pets.

Authorities moved swiftly in their investigation. Less than 24 hours after the crime, Auburn police, working with local law enforcement agencies, arrested 31-year-old Harold Rashad Dabney III of Montgomery. He has been charged with two counts of capital murder, including murder during a robbery and murder during a kidnapping. Dabney is currently being held without bond in the Lee County Jail.

One piece of comfort in this tragedy is that Dr. Schnuelle’s dog, who was with her at the time of the assault, was found unharmed. The news has brought a measure of relief to friends, family, and animal lovers who knew how deeply devoted she was to caring for both large and small animals.

    Reactions

Dr. Schnuelle’s life was defined by service, education, and compassion. She served as a professor in Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences from 2003 until her retirement in 2021. During her nearly two decades of teaching, she made a profound impact on her students and colleagues. Known for her dedication, expertise, and kindness, she inspired countless future veterinarians who now serve communities across the nation.

Her passing is a heartbreaking loss not only to Auburn University but also to the broader Auburn community, where she was admired as a neighbor, mentor, and friend. The Auburn family has come together to grieve, remembering her as a brilliant educator, a caring veterinarian, and a person whose life embodied compassion.

University officials and former students have expressed their condolences, sharing stories of how Dr. Schnuelle went beyond the classroom to encourage, support, and uplift those around her. Many credit her for shaping their careers and instilling in them a love of veterinary medicine.

Dr. Schnuelle’s untimely death is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating impact of senseless violence. As Auburn mourns, the community also celebrates the life and legacy of a woman whose passion, generosity, and dedication to animals and people will never be forgotten.
