LOUISVILLE, KY — John Fredrick Hoppes, a proud World War II veteran, celebrated a remarkable milestone on September 24, turning 100 years old. The milestone was marked with a special party hosted by friends and family at Kingfish in Jeffersonville, Indiana, on Sunday, honoring his long and distinguished life.

    What Happened

Hoppes, who served in the U.S. Navy for eight years, enlisted in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1951. His journey through life has been marked by resilience and service, and he shared his secret to living such a long life: “I have good genes, and if you have genes that my mother had, who lived until 109 – chances are you’re going to make it.”

Hoppes’ life has been shaped by his service during World War II, particularly his time aboard the USS Tuck. In 1949, he was part of a courageous mission to save the crew of the USS Cochino after it was disabled by fire and explosions during a covert spy mission. Hoppes’ bravery during this time was just one of the many moments that would define his remarkable life.

    Family and Legacy

Hoppes is a father to nine children, grandfather to 19 grandchildren, and great-grandfather to 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. His family, which spans across multiple generations, continues to celebrate his legacy and the impact he’s had on their lives.

    Public Reactions

The community came together to celebrate Hoppes’ incredible achievement, honoring not only his service in the Navy but also the longevity and wisdom he has shared with his loved ones.
