HAYS, Kansas — Tragedy struck the Hays Police Department early Sunday morning, Sept. 28, when an officer was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call. The incident, now under investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), has sent shockwaves through the community and underscored the dangers law enforcement officers face in protecting the public.
According to local reports, the chain of events began late Saturday night, Sept. 27, when a woman fled her home after a violent altercation with her partner. The victim reported that her partner had rammed her vehicle with his truck as she attempted to escape. She sought refuge in a nearby home and contacted authorities for help.
Around 1:55 a.m. on Sept. 28, officers from the Hays Police Department, along with the Kansas Highway Patrol, arrived at the scene and established a perimeter around the suspect’s residence. As officers approached, a single gunshot rang out from inside the home, striking one of the officers.
First responders immediately provided lifesaving aid to the injured officer, who was airlifted to a regional hospital. Despite the swift efforts of emergency personnel, the officer succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead just after 4 a.m. The identity of the fallen officer has not yet been released, pending notification of the family.
Following the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence, prompting a coordinated tactical response. Law enforcement deployed gas munitions, window-breaking projectiles, and a surveillance drone to monitor the situation. Throughout the standoff, officers refrained from returning fire.
At approximately 6:15 a.m., tactical teams entered the home and discovered the suspect deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The KBI has confirmed no other suspects are being sought, and the investigation remains active. Upon conclusion, the case will be forwarded to the Ellis County Attorney for review.
