C.J. Stroud, the Houston Texans’ quarterback, recently shared some thoughts on how his body feels as he navigates his career in the National Football League (NFL). Despite celebrating his 24th birthday, Stroud is already noticing the physical demands of playing professional football.

During a recent interview, Stroud discussed the strategies he uses to maintain peak physical condition. He emphasized the importance of a healthy diet and a consistent exercise routine. However, he also made a surprising comparison between his current physical state and his high school playing days.

The conversation started when Stroud was asked about what he does to stay in shape. He explained that he focuses on his diet and makes sure to stretch regularly. “Where I think the explosiveness comes from is being better on my diet, being better with stretching,” Stroud said.

Then, with a smile, he added a comment that raised a few eyebrows. “I feel like I’m getting old. I’m not as quick as I used to be,” Stroud admitted. He even recalled watching old footage of himself from high school, remembering how fast and agile he felt back then. “I was watching my high school stuff a couple days ago. I was like 180 (pounds), and I was rolling, but not no more.”

Stroud, who was named the 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, is currently listed at 220 pounds, a noticeable increase from his high school weight.

While it’s common for athletes to gain weight as they develop physically and professionally, Stroud’s comments highlight the awareness he has about his body and how it changes over time. He seems determined to adapt and find new ways to maintain his performance level. “But, yeah, I try to just be better with that stuff so I can run fast,” Stroud concluded, indicating his commitment to adjusting his training and diet to compensate for any perceived loss of speed.

It’s worth noting that while Stroud feels he might have lost a step, his performance on the field is still closely watched and debated.

Looking at his stats, Stroud’s performance has seen some shifts since his impressive rookie year. In his first year, he threw for 4,108 yards, with 23 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions, leading the Texans to the playoffs. This season, through four games, he has four touchdowns and three interceptions. Last year, he recorded 3,727 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

The Texans have had Stroud as quarterback the past two seasons where they made it to the playoffs in both seasons.

As Stroud continues his NFL journey, his focus on diet, exercise, and flexibility will be crucial. His awareness of his body and his willingness to adapt could be key to maintaining a successful and long-lasting career.
